My paternal grandparents had their own veg garden, chickens, rabbits and goats so they were pretty self sufficient during the first depression.
BTW Clara uses quite a lot of salt.
Well - I went to the garden center just yesterday and bought seeds for runner beans and beets and tomato plants. I wonder if I can sustain us on these marvelous things if Andy loses his job. I can't have chickens so eggs are out of the question.
And I must say that when I was watching Clara add all that salt to her pepper and egg mixture I thought, "Jeez, I wonder if she has high blood pressure."
