Not So Big House

Katherine, you need to see this book. I got it out of the library and its fantastic. Gorgeous smaller homes to drool over. Also, great theories on how smaller houses, when beautifully designed, are SO MUCH BETTER than big honking houses.

Check it out!

Julia girlfriend!!

I know that book! I love that book. OK, so I've only glimpsed it - but I've heard about it a lot (of course in the bay area where homes are $500/sf it is a very popular theme) - but I am going to get it from the library and really look at it.

A small home with character, walking distance to everything is perfect.

Have you thought about Portland? The weather is a bit gray but everybody raves about it. Lots of little neighborhoods etc.

It's amazing how different people live in different parts of the country (or countries)

if you can handle London you can handle Portland - the weather is similar as on the same parallel - much less "gray" than Seattle for sure!

Portland is a great little town - expect home prices to be approx 240/sq ft - unless you want to be downtown and within walking distances then figure 400+/sq ft - and with the buyers market there are some great finds if you are willing to manage renovation yourself

and from the topics you cover on your blog you would enjoy the political climate - the cultural diversity

but check the job market with your area of study -

another hot area right now is Bend, OR . . .

AND the trend towards smaller home is quite the thing now - man is afterall a nesting creature and studies show that large sterile echoing homes are loosing their appeal -
